How the free typing test calculates WPM
KeyVelocity uses the standard convention of five correct characters per word. Correct final characters are divided by five and then by elapsed minutes. Raw WPM also reflects attempted output, while accuracy includes corrected mistakes so backspace does not erase the original error signal.
The timer starts on the first actual input. A focus click does not start it, and pasted answer text invalidates the run.
Use a comparable benchmark
A 60-second prose test is not equivalent to a 30-second code or numeric test. Personal bests and the PB pace ghost are separated by duration, mode, language, assessment style and physical-versus-touch input. For transparent definitions and limitations, read the KeyVelocity methodology.
